Camp Sealth promotes an atmosphere of inclusiveness for kids with a wide variety of ability levels, emotional challenges, etc. Our staff assist campers with mild to moderate disabilities, enabling them to succeed at camp. We can provide an interpreter for kids who are deaf or hard of hearing, and accommodate those who use a wheelchair to get around.

We are not equipped nor staffed to work with kids who need a lot of assistance with personal care, constant one-to-one support or who have significant difficulty controlling their disruptive behavior. Youth who adversely affect other campers' experience may not be ready for the close living situation that camp involves, and may not be successful at Sealth. You might consider our terrific family camp in May, just for families with a special needs child, Special Family Weekend.

If your child has a disability or behavioral challenges, please call the Inclusion Coordinator before registering, 206 463 3174, ext. 22. With your insight and information, we can help you select an appropriate program, as well as pre-arrange a support plan for your child. If you find that Sealth is not the right place for your child, you can look at the Summer Camp Directory for Children with Special Needs at www.cshcn.org or request a free copy by calling toll-free, 866-987-2500, option 4 and leave a message requesting the booklet.

Hearing & Vision Challenges
Blind or deaf youth can attend almost any in-camp program at Sealth; we’ll provide a site orientation and buddy for the blind, and an interpreter for the deaf or hard of hearing. Please register by May 1 to enable us to employ the specialists your child needs.

Asthma
All sessions
Children with asthma may attend any session or in-camp program and expect quality care and asthma management from the camp health staff. Camp Sealth partners with the American Lung Association of Washington (ALAW) to recruit health staff who are knowledgeable about respiratory diseases and who are now at camp every session of the summer. ALAW is also generously providing financial assistance to eligible families; apply using the Camp Sealth Campership form. All campers with asthma will be required to work out an Asthma Management Plan with their physician before attending camp; parents must complete the Asthma Management Form (you can print it from this website) and bring it to check in.

Diabetes
If your child has Diabetes, any session of Day Camp will work great, and we can work with children with diabetes during any session of Resident Camp. However, sessions 3, 4, and 3/4 of Resident Camp are best because medical personnel from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) join the camp staff during these sessions to provide your child with optimum care and support with understanding the disease.

During the ADA sessions, nutrition activities, blood glucose monitoring, and injections/medications are integrated into the camp program as well as support with facing the day-to-day challenges of diabetes. Kids go home feeling more independent and confident in their diabetes management. Registration is required with both Camp Sealth and the ADA. To learn more about this experience and how to register, contact the American Diabetes Association for details: 206-282-4616, ext. 7202 or ext. 7311; toll free 888-342-2383; or visit: http://www.diabetes.org/communityprogramsandlocalevents/diabetescamps/wa-sealth.jsp.

If your child has diabetes and cannot attend sessions 3, 4, or 3/4, please call the camp director to discuss your child's care. You'll be asked to submit these two forms: a 3-day Glucose Record and a Diabetes Health Evaluation from your child's physician. (Do NOT use there forms if your are attending the ADA sessions described in the above paragraph; the ADA will provide families with specific ADA forms.)

Special Dietary Needs
If your child has food intolerances or a special diet, we will do all we can to work with him or her. Click on this link for details about our PKU program (session 5) and gluten intolerance (sessions 6 and 7) of Resident Camp. Feel free to call our Food Service Manager to discuss your child’s needs, 206 463 3174, ext. 25.
