| Welcome to Camp Sealth’s Horse Camp! To help you prepare for a fabulous camp experience, here's a glimpse of what to expect as well as details for what to pack.
WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?
On the first day of camp you’ll meet your counselor and cabin-mates, move into your cabin and get settled. Decide as a group what you want to do during the session (besides ride horses, of course!) and make a schedule for the week. You’ll also meet the riding staff and a few of the horses, and learn your way around camp.
Riding lessons are two hours of hands-on horse time during each full day of the session. On the first riding day, you’ll meet “your” horse, get acquainted with him or her, and before you know it, you’ll be up on horseback! Riding lessons are a combination of arena lessons, skill exercises and games to help you master control of your horse. As you become more confident, you may head out for a trail ride or two.
WHAT TO PACK
In addition to your regular camp gear (clothes, sleeping bag, toiletries, etc.), here are a few things that all Wrangler campers will need to bring:
- Long denim pants for riding (jeans only, no capris)
- Riding boots with 1/2” to 3/4” heel and no tread
- Rain gear (campers will ride regardless of the weather, unless it’s unsafe)
Please make every effort to bring your own footwear. If you are looking for boots, check out second hand stores, tack or feed stores, or your friend’s closet. Shoe stores like Payless or Wal-Mart often carry boots that would work fine (no spike; max 1" inch tall heels). State Line Tack (www.statelinetack.com) generally carries a basic rubber riding boot at a reasonable price ($25-$40). Sealth also has some used boots for campers size 9 (ladies) and below to borrow. If you would like to confirm that we have a pair for your child contact HorseCamp@campfire-usa.org. Consider donating used or outgrown boots for future campers.
Riding helmets are mandatory for all activities around the horses and are provided by Sealth. If your camper brings his/her own helmet, it must be ASTM-approved for horseback riding and will be inspected for safety by the Sealth riding staff prior to use.
WHAT ABOUT BUDDIES?
Camp Sealth makes every effort to keep friends together in the same cabin. Friends attending camp together must be the same grade level and gender, but do not need to register for the same riding level.
HORSE-RELATED ACTIVITIES
During each session, all campers will participate in (and possibly help plan!) an exciting horse-related activity. Possibilities include a western hoedown, line-dancing, pony painting, a game show or horse show. Equestrian (English) campers will have the option to plan an English tea.
In addition to regular riding lessons, older Wrangler campers (Pony Express and above) will participate in one or more 1/2-hour ground lessons to learn more about horses and horse care.
All campers help with chores such as feeding, grooming and cleaning up after the horses.
OTHER CAMP ACTIVITIES
Wrangler campers will participate in most activities available for their age group, including archery, canoeing, rowing, fishing, crafts, hikes, nature, an overnight campout, campfires, theme meals and much more!
